| are u better now? there was this girl in 6th grade that called me hot pocket boy... >.< we had like this worksheet about things we can eat cold and i said hot pockets. The Darkside of Finch Guitarist Alex Linares discusses the band's involvement with Underworld.Kate Beckinsale has been gathering a lot of steam over the past several weeks. And with good reason. I mean who can resist the trailers of her in tight leather accoutrements, blazing guns gripped in her lithe hands as she jumps off of rain soaked gothic towers into shadowy streets below. Of course I'm referring to the trailers for the new vampire vs. werewolf flick Underworld. But Ms. Beckinsale isn't the only one catching eyes. SoCal band Finch have been turning heads and perking up ears, as well, thanks to their new song "Worms of the Earth," which just happens to be the lead off single from the Underworld soundtrack. The band, which has been enjoying the fruits of their labors (those being the 13 tracks on their debut album What It Is To Burn) out on the road for the past year and some change, have recently begun holing themselves up in the studio to work on their next album. Mere moments before he and the rest of the band were to head out to the red carpet premier for Underworld at Mann's Chinese Theater in Los Angeles, guitarist Alex Linares took the time to phone us up. During our conversation we were able to discuss his band's involvement with the movie's soundtrack as well as the filming of their video for "Worms of the Earth." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IGN: So you guys are in the studio working on new material right now?Alex Linares: We're in our practice studio, just writing and stuff right now. But we actually took a day off so we can go to the premiere of Underworld. I've actually made a day out of it. My favorite vegan restaurant is here in LA. It's called Real Food Daily. It's on La Cienega right between Melrose and Beverly. IGN: Right on. So when you say that you're in the practice studio, are you working on material for your next album already?Alex Linares: Yeah, we've just been rehearsing for almost two months now, just writing and writing. We're not even playing old stuff or anything, we're just writing all sorts of new stuff. It's going pretty good. I think we have like nine or 10 songs written. Something like that. It's going along quicker than I thought it was going to be. When we wrote the last record we spent almost a year writing it, you know? When we started talking to Drive Thru Records and they gave us a contract, it took so long for our lawyer and their lawyer to negotiate the contract--it took like 11 months--so during that time we were writing our record. We basically wrote almost a song a month. We'd write a song and play it for a month and then get totally sick of it. But this album is going a lot quicker. We've been on the road for almost two years and we didn't write anything besides "Worms of the Earth." That was the only song we wrote on the road, so I think all of our creative juices or whatever were kind of being held back and they've all just kind of flown out since we've started writing again.IGN: Speaking of "Worms of the Earth," how did you guys get hooked-up with the Underworld soundtrack?Alex Linares: I think it was somewhat of a fluke. Our manager, his name is Andy Harris, he happened to be meeting somebody about one of his other bands and saw that this guy had a wipe board or some notes like stapled to a wall or bulletin board about some upcoming soundtrack. And our manager saw all the names of the artists involved--Maynard James Keenan, Danny Lohner, David Bowie, all these great bands were on it. So he was like 'What is that?' And the guy was like 'It's a soundtrack we're putting together for a movie called Underworld.' And our manager was 'Hey, I'd like Finch to be on that.' So basically our manager, by coincidence, just kind of got us on it somehow. I also think the guy who was putting it together really loved our band, too and loved our song. SO that made it kind of easy.IGN: Did you write "Worms of the Earth" specifically for the movie?Alex Linares: No. It was actually written a couple of months ago, way before I had even heard of the movie. I actually started seeing trailers for the movie before I even heard we were gonna be on the soundtrack. So we definitely didn't write it for the movie. It just kind of worked out pretty good. The original song that they wanted was a song called "Bite Marks and Bloodstains," which actually lyrically would have gone along a lot better for the movie. If you would have heard that song on the soundtrack you would have been like 'Oh, did you guys write that for the movie?' There would have been no doubt about it.Kate B. gettin' creepy to the sounds of Finch. IGN: Why did you decide to not to use that track then?Alex Linares: I don't think it was really our decision. I think they wanted to go with "Worms of the Earth." I think it just worked out better for them somehow.IGN: Both of these songs are new songs, though, that you've just recently written, right? Alex Linares: "Worms of the Earth" and "Bite Marks and Bloodstains" are two brand new songs that we wrote for our new record. But now we've just made "Worms of the Earth" exclusive for the soundtrack.IGN: So, basically it won't show up on the album, rightAlex Linares: I don't think so. We might do something crazy with it, like have a weird jazz version of the song. You know, just do something weird and stupid to make it different.IGN: That's what always trips me out about soundtracks. You know, sometimes they get bands to watch the movie and write original material specifically tailored to the film. And other times, as is with your case, they incorporate a song that a band has already written that they feel fits the film.Alex Linares: Totally. As soon as I heard about it, I mean I'd seen the trailers and I was totally stoked about the movie. I was like 'F@#k, this movie looks awesome. I can't wait to see it.' And then when we had the opportunity to be part of the soundtrack we were like 'Yeah, let's do it.' It wasn't maybe until a week after we shot the music video for it that I started thinking, 'Wait a sec, what if this movie sucks? What did we get ourselves into?' I was like 'We should have requested to see the whole movie before we agreed to it.' But I'm sure it's gonna be a great movie.IGN: You didn't see the movie at all before you gave them the song and did the video?Alex Linares: No. That's the only unfortunate thing that kind of weirded me out. We just kind of agreed blindly. I just hope that it's a great movie and that we lucked out, you know?IGN: Now your video intercuts clips from the movie with you guys playing in some gothic cathedral with rain pouring down on you. Did you guys pick the clips from the film or did they just give you some stock footage to use in the video?Alex Linares: The guy who actually directed the movie, his name is Len Wiseman, he started out by directing music videos. This is actually like his first movie. The guy who directed the "Worms of the Earth" video, I think must have been a friend of his. But he was a great director. He had a total vision of what he wanted to do and the type of shots he needed. And he didn't make us work more than we needed to. Usually f@#kin' video shoots are so redundant and jus sh!tty, you know sitting on one set and playing the song all the way through like 20 times. This guy did it a great way. We had three different sets that we played on. And each time we only ran through like the first 50 seconds of the song. Like we'd do the first 50 seconds of the song for the first set and the second set was the next 50 seconds of the song. He basically cut it up into parts. If you've seen the video, the first half of our performance is on one set and then the next one is in a totally different room and then the last part is outside in the rain. I think the way the director worked was just great. He was a great director. He's the same guy that did the "Send The Pain Below" video for Chevelle, which I wasn't to stoked about. But he also did "Into The Void" by Nine Inch Nails, which I thought was amazing.IGN: How long was the video shoot? Did you knock it out in a day?Alex Linares: Yeah, it was probably like 12 hours.Finch, waiting for the rain to come. IGN: Obviously the three different sets were pretty close to each other, then, right?Alex Linares: Oh yeah, they were all in the same building. There were two different rooms in this giant, crazy Gothic house. Then we went outside and did the rain shot right outside the front door, basically.IGN: Now were the rain shots real? I mean did they have sprinklers dumping down on you guys or did they blue screen it in afterwards?Alex Linares: No, no, they had rain machines f@#kin' dumping rain on us.IGN: What does that do to your equipment?Alex Linares: They had a runner go to Guitar Center and buy the cheapest stuff they could find. I play a basic Fender Telecaster, so it was easy to find a Squire Telecaster for like a hundred bucks at Guitar Center or something. It didn't ruin our equipment. It was in the budget to buy some cheapy, sh!tty equipment or something. IGN: Yeah, I wasn't sure if you guys were really getting wet or not.Alex Linares: Yeah, that was pretty tough. It was like; you know how you go to Magic Mountain...you've been to Magic Mountain before, right?IGN: Actually, no. But I know where it is and I've driven by it a million times on my way into LA.Alex Linares: Well, you've been on roller coasters before, right? You know the ones that just go up the hill and then they stop at the top and then just wait while you anticipate the whole drop. So we were sitting there with our instruments by our amps and we were ready for the rain. We were like 'When are they gonna do it?' It was 2 AM, it was cold as sh!t, and we knew the water was gonna be freezing. It was just like anticipating the drop or in this case the rain, knowing 'I know I'm gonna get f@#kin' soaked in a second.' It just sucked [laughs]. But as soon as the take would start and the rain would go for a couple of seconds, then you kind of got used to it. But it was dreadful all day, though. We weren't looking forward to the rain shot.IGN: Last question: werewolves or vampires?Alex Linares: [laughs] Definitely vampires.IGN: Are you a late night person?Alex Linares: Somewhat. Whenever I'm on tour, it's ridiculous. I won't go to sleep until 4 or 5 in the morning. But that's what happens on the road. But when I'm at home, dude, I'm in bed by like 1 AM. I get to bed pretty early. I just dig vampires, man. I think one of my favorite movies is Interview With A Vampire. That's just a sick movie. | |
